Qasr Al Hosn is the oldest and most significant building in Abu Dhabi. It includes the city’s first permanent structure, a coral and sea stone watchtower built to protect the settlement of Abu Dhabi established on the island in the 1760s. It comprises two major iconic buildings: The Inner Fort (around 1795) and the Outer Palace (1939-41). Over the centuries, it has been home to the ruling family, the seat of government, a consultative council and a national archive; it now stands as the nation’s living archive and the narrator of Abu Dhabi’s history. Transformed into a museum in 2018 following more than nine years of intensive conservation and restoration work, It is a national monument that encapsulates the development of Abu Dhabi from a settlement reliant on fishing and pearling in the 18th century, to a modern, global metropolis, with displays of artefacts and archival materials dating back to as far as 6000 BC.

Al Ain Oasis, nestled in the heart of the city, is believed to be the largest oasis in the Al Ain region and holds a prominent place on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Distinguished by its central location within the urban fabric, it is nourished by the traditional “falaj” irrigation system. Al Ain Oasis safeguards a culture and way of life that have endured for millennia. Spanning 130 hectares, this oasis is the largest among all the oases in the Al Ain region. Farmers continue to cultivate over 80,000 date palm trees, alongside fruit trees such as mango, orange, banana, fig, and jujube (locally known as “sidr”), which also serve as fodder for animals.

Al Jahili Fort, one of the largest forts in the United Arab Emirates, was built in the late 19th century by Sheikh Zayed bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, Zayed the First (r. 1855-1909), both as a symbol of power and as a royal summer residence. The original fort consisted of a square fortified enclosure and a distinctive four-storey circular tower. At the end of the 19th century, the emirate of Abu Dhabi was ruled by Sheikh Zayed bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, leader of the Bani Yas tribe. During summer, Abu Dhabi’s rulers left the intense humidity of the coast for the more temperate weather of Al Ain, with its low humidity, fertile land, and fresh water. Sheikh Zayed owned a farm in Al Ain, and he ordered the construction of Al Jahili Fort to control the tribes who lived in the area. He would also use the fort as his summer residence. Work began in 1891, but it was not completed until 1898. Early restoration work was done on the fort in 1985, and a major rehabilitation project was undertaken in 2007-08. A visitor information Centre, a permanent exhibition space devoted to the explorer and photographer Wilfred Thesiger, and a temporary exhibition space were added.

Qasr Al Muwaiji saw the birth of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan in 1948. The site features an exhibition dedicated to Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan narration, from his early years in Al Ain to his role in deeds in the modern nation. The architectural gem now offers its visitors a variety of historical and traditional experiences associated with the venue.

The Natural History Museum was opened in November 1995 by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi – ruler of Sharjah. In March 2008, His Highness opened an addition to the Natural History Museum, which is the Botanical Museum, that is considered the first of its kind in the Middle East. Arabia’s Wildlife Centre was established on 1999 by His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council of the United Arab Emirates, the Ruler of Sharjah. And it is consider as the first learning centre in a protected area.

Arabia’s Wildlife Centre provides an opportunity to discover the amazing diversity of indigenous fauna found on the Arabian Peninsula. Housing the largest collection of Arabian wildlife in the world, the Centre is also home to representatives of several species which are endangered in Arabia, highlighting the need to conserve the environment to ensure the continued survival of this important part of Arabian heritage.

The Islamic Garden was inaugurated in 2014 and is considered the first Islamic garden in the world to feature plants mentioned in the Holy Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Prophet.

The Islamic garden embraces a Fundamental Islamic vision, to think and meditate on the Quran verses and how it relates to the modern science. The garden contains 50 different plants mentioned in the Qur’an, including: Tamarisk, Christ’s thorn, palm trees, Pomegranate, grapes, figs, olives, Sweet basil, Camphor tree and ginger. The garden also includes 42 plants mentioned in the Hadith and Sunnah with their classifications and medical uses, such as: black cumin, Salvadora persica , saffron, Aloe and mustard. All the plants mentioned in the Quran and Sunnah are in the garden except for two plants: namely Alzaqoum, a tree in hell, and the tree of the “Nitraria” which is only grown in Palestine.

Random International’s immersive installation Rain Room (2012) invites you to walk through a downpour of continuous rain without getting wet. The responsive environment follows visitors as they navigate the darkened underground space, preventing the rain from falling directly above any detected human presence.

This site-specific installation uses 2,500 litres of self-cleaning recycled water, which is controlled through a system of networked 3D tracking cameras. The work explores how humankind’s relationships to one another and to nature are increasingly mediated through intangible technologies.

The park was opened in 20\01\2020 by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, the UAE Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, to educate visitors about the geological significance of Jabal Buhais and the surrounding Sharjah region.

The park has important archeological sites and fossils dating back from millions of years. The unique designs of the park allow you to discover how the region’s most prominent geological landmarks, such as the Hajar Mountain Range, mountains, gravel plains, and sand dunes all came to be. The park includes two archaeological sites that have contributed to knowledge about the history of human settlement in this area, which dates back to more than 125,000 years. The location of the Buhais Geology Park in particular and the mountain, in general, provides evidence of how local nature was formed at least 93 million years ago. The site has a wealth of fossilized remains of many ancient marine creatures that inhabited the shallow seas that submerged most of the land in the UAE until relatively recently from a geological perspective. Ophiolite rock is one of the park’s most important exhibits.

The Mleiha Archaeological Centre in Sharjah offers a deep insight into the region’s ancient history, with human activity in the area dating back over 210,000 years. The museum features artifacts from the Paleolithic , Neolithic, Bronze, and Iron Ages, including tools, pottery, weapons, and animal skeletons, reflecting the development of early societies in the Arabian Peninsula. A prominent feature is the Bronze Age Umm Al Nar tomb located in front of the centre, allowing visitors to see first-hand the burial practices of early civilizations. Surrounding the museum, excavations at sites such as Al Thuqeibah, Jebel Faya, and Al Buhais have uncovered evidence of early human settlements, highlighting Mleiha’s significance as a hub of human activity and migration across the region.

The Khor Kalba Mangrove Centre was opened in April 2021 by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, the UAE Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, to educate visitors about the environmental importance of Alqurm Reserve, which is considered the oldest Mangrove forest in the region. The center is one of the educational centers affiliated with the Environment and Protected Areas Authority in Sharjah.

The Khor Kalba Mangrove Centre is a symbol of learning, entertainment and tourism at the same time, as the centre’s logo includes two main elements in the reserve, namely the unique mangroves and the Arabian collared kingfisher. The mangroves are a natural resource as they maintain the ecological balance and thus constitute a shelter for the nesting of the Arabian collared Kingfisher, which is not found anywhere in the world except in the Qurm Reserve in Kalba.

The external shape of the center is inspired by the Sea Urchin.

The centre was established in March 2016, according to the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, to protect and conserve nature, preserve biological diversity in the mountain environment, and to preserve its endangered animals.

The Al Hefaiyah Mountain Conservation Centre spans an area of 12 square kilometers and is home to 30 species of mountain and desert animals. The reserve includes indoor areas housing a variety of snakes, lizards, hedgehogs, and scorpions, as well as vast natural landscapes where the Arabian leopard, Arabian wolf, Arabian Tahr, and Caracal. The reserve offers golf carts that allow visitors to easily tour the area, and qualified guides are available to answer visitors’ questions about Arabian wildlife. There is also a night exhibit where visitors can observe the nocturnal activities of desert creatures.

Dhayah Fort is the only remaining hilltop fort in the United Arab Emirates. It is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List and stands proudly amidst the arid mountains and fertile date palm oases in the northern Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah.
The site dates back to the Late Bronze Age (1600–1300 BCE), when it was used by local communities for settlement and fortification. The twin-peaked golden mud-brick fortress was built in the 19th century and was restored in the late 1990s. Dhayah fort stands as a remarkable symbol of the UAE’s rich history and cultural heritage.

The fort that now houses the National Museum of Ras Al Khaimah has a long and layered history. Originally constructed by the Qawasim between 1809 and 1819 during a period of heightened conflict with British forces, it was destroyed in 1820 and rebuilt by 1833. In the 1920s, it became the official residence of the ruling family and remained in use until the late 1960s, after which it served as the main police station. By 1987, the fort was officially opened to the public as the National Museum of Ras Al Khaimah.
Today, the museum’s collections provide valuable insights into the region’s culture and traditions, with exhibit rooms arranged around the central courtyard. The displays showcase artifacts from the area’s earliest settlers through to the late Islamic period.

Al Jazeera Al Hamra is the last surviving pearling village in the Gulf region, preserved with all its original elements intact. It is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List. Its history dates back to the late 16th century, and it was once a complete island connected to the mainland from the east. Its residents abandoned it in the 1970s due to the changing way of life following the discovery of oil.
The village includes around 500 traditional houses with inner courtyards, built from coral stone, beach rocks, sandbrick blocks, and palm fronds (Areesh), along with several mosques and a traditional market (Souq). Today, Al Jazeera Al Hamra stands as the largest open-air museum in the region, reflecting traditional local architecture and embodying the authentic Emirati way of life.
